First of the Month Favorites: Gift Giving Edition

October happens to be my birthday month, though it's never really been my thing to make a fuss about it. What I will admit to is buying myself gifts pretty much year-round, no occasion required — and this month's list leans into that.

These are the local shops I find myself wandering into “just to look,” the ones I go to for the perfect welcome home gift for clients or celebrations with friends, and the ones I circle back to when I'm treating myself to something nice. Central Oregon does this kind of shopping so well, and here's where I'll be spending my time this month — for the people I love, and for me too.

In Bend

Absolute Horse

As a lifelong show jumper, I have a soft spot for anyone who understands that “horse girl” isn't a phase — it's a lifestyle. Absolute Horse carries everything from tack and apparel to gifts that actually make sense for the equestrian in your life, whether she's showing this weekend or just happiest with dirt on her boots.

Donner Flowers

Beyond stunning arrangements, Donner stocks home goods and specialty items that make even a “just because” gift feel considered. I have yet to walk out without a smile on my face — or without finding something for own home. I recently picked up flowers for a friend, and days later she was still gushing over the vase, the details, the flowers themselves — that's exactly the kind of gift Donner helps you give.

Wild Petals & Provisions

A specialty provisions shop worth building an afternoon around. It's the kind of place where you go in for one thing and leave with a bag full of items you didn't know you needed until you saw them on the shelf — and it's exactly where I head when an impromptu picnic or last-minute dinner party calls.

Silverado

Because who doesn't love jewelry? Silverado's collection pulls from local and international designers, so you can find something with real Central Oregon roots or something entirely one-of-a-kind. For something truly special, Silverado is unbeatable.

Kara's Kitchenware

Independently owned and exactly what every home chef on your list actually wants. Kara's is packed floor to ceiling with kitchen gadgets — the fun, slightly excessive kind you don't know you need until you see them — alongside real, well-made cooking essentials. Add in an outstanding selection of olive oils and hands-on cooking classes, and it's as much an experience as a shop.

In Redmond

Cognitive Surplus

A client turned me on to this gem, and I'm so glad they did. They discovered it while exploring Central Oregon and their 8-year-old wanted a new journal to track their family's new-home journey — which might be the best origin story for a gift-shop find I've heard. Cognitive Surplus specializes in sustainable stationery and lifestyle goods that celebrate science and curiosity, and it's the rare shop that delights kids and adults in equal measure.

In Sisters

Paulina Springs Books

A genuinely charming independent bookstore with a curated selection of great reads, a strong showcase of local writers, and a full calendar of workshops. It's the kind of shop that makes you want to linger. I've never once walked out with only the book I came in for.

Landmark Fine Goods

My favorite candles come from here — especially the Metolius, which I keep burning at home for my dad. My favorite candles come from here — especially the Metolius, which I keep burning at home for my dad. Beyond candles, Landmark carries gorgeous bags and unique women's wear — reason enough on its own to stop in. If you want something that feels distinctly Central Oregon, start here.

Wherever your October takes you, I hope you'll stop into a few of these and support the local makers and shop owners who make Central Oregon feel like home.

Happy shopping!
